The Social Determinants of Health Issue

Managing Editor: KC Esper

Photo Editor: Cass Davis

Designer: Mary Delaware

How much of our health is dealt from our environment?

As it turns out, a lot. This issue explores two concepts: the social determinants of health and the people in charge of acknowledging them. Because the former is so nuanced, we chose to represent it on the cover conceptually. Our team worked together to produce an image using painted objects, each representing one of the determinants, that encourages the reader to look at the photo up close and explore it to understand it—much like leaders in the industry do to address and combat the issues holistically.

What Brings You In Today?

Issue 2, 2020 supplemental content: discussing how our zip codes affects our genetic codes

“I realized the same factors affecting the public sector also affected the everyday worker, and there was no comprehensive private sector solution. There was a clear need for employers to improve health outcomes in the workplace, but they did not know how to effectively improve physical activity levels, nutrition behaviors, or how to reduce the stress of their workforce.”

Issue 2, 2020 narrative: Carly Marino-Healy, Marino Wellness

“It’s about finding common ground. Disclosing any errors we make is the right thing to do, and it’s best to talk to people upfront, candidly and transparently, rather than sticking our head in the sand and ignoring something—or worse, covering it up.”

Issue 2, 2020 feature section story: Rick Kidwell, UPMC
